Sustainability

We have joined Messe München, and we're glad that, as an event technology company, we too can contribute to living up to the exhibition center's philosophy. For several years now we have relied on energy-saving lighting and advise our clients on energy-efficient solutions.

Messe München switches entirely to green electricity – another building block of sustainable action

As of January 2020, Messe München has switched entirely to electricity generated purely from renewable sources, taking a further step toward climate-neutral operations. In previous years, more than half of its electricity needs were already covered by renewable energy sources. "We have now switched to 100 percent, which will bring about a further substantial reduction in CO2 emissions," explains Klaus Dittrich, Chairman of the Management Board of Messe München.

The average electricity demand of Messe München at its Munich-Riem site corresponds to that of around 9,100 two-person households in Munich. By switching completely to renewably generated electricity, Messe München saves around 6,400 tonnes of CO2 per year. The significance of this measure is best illustrated by the number of trees it would take to absorb the same amount of harmful carbon dioxide from the air. Assuming that around 80 trees are needed per year to offset one tonne of CO2, the future savings at the exhibition center are equivalent to the performance of around 511,500 trees per year. "These are figures that make us quite proud," says a pleased Dittrich, adding: "As one of the world's leading trade fair organizers, Messe München has a strong international presence. Both in its actions and on its grounds, it is committed to sustainability in a particular way. By switching to green electricity, we are taking a further step here toward climate-neutral operations."

STADTWERKE MÜNCHEN AS PARTNER

Switching to green electricity is a key measure for greater sustainability. Messe München has opted for M-Ökostrom from Stadtwerke München, which is transparently verified to be produced exclusively from renewable energy sources. In the Munich area, these are primarily hydroelectric power plants as well as photovoltaic and geothermal facilities. Biogas and wind power currently still play a comparatively minor role.

COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY

For Messe München, entrepreneurial success and responsible action go hand in hand. The company is committed to environmental and climate protection as well as to conserving resources. Messe München was the first exhibition center in the world to be awarded the "Energy-Efficient Company" certificate by TÜV SÜD. Also exemplary of the company's high sustainability standards in operating the exhibition grounds are the photovoltaic systems on the exhibition hall roofs, a natural-gas-powered combined heat and power plant, and a sophisticated rainwater infiltration system that relieves the sewer system. Parts of the exhibition grounds are heated using geothermal energy. Messe München is already a signatory of the "Fairpflichtet sustainability code", which focuses on sustainability in the organization and execution of events through ten guiding principles.
